Introduction

Nepal Energy Development Company Pvt. Ltd (NEDCO) is one of the leading private sector renewable energy companies with a pioneering history in the field of Renewable Energy Technology (RETs) in Nepal. It was initiated in 1999 as a sister organization of National Bio Gas Company (RGG) by the well-qualified and professional expert having national and international exposure in solar home systems (SHSs) like biogas, solar, micro hydro and improved cook stoves (ICSs), etc. From the very establishment, the skilled and trained manpower of NEDCO are working for the sustainable and integrated distribution and adopting of Biomass, Solar PV & Solar Thermal, Bio gas and Micro hydro Power in different parts of the country.

Mission

Objectives

• Produce alternative energy from solar, biogas, wind power, ICSs, micro-hydro electricity, etc to fulfill the growing demand of energy of the rural and urban areas of Nepal.
• Act as a technical consultancy organization on the field of alternative energy production, promotion and extension.
• Implement alternative energy programs through integrated approach for sustainable development (social, economic and environmental) of the rural communities.
• Function in participation with Government Organizations (GOs), non-government organizations (NGOs), and community based organization (CBOs) in the sustainable community development approaches to enhance the better energy consumption and environmental protection.

Activities

• Installation of different types of RETs at households, business house, corporate offices, communities level, etc.
• Act as the repair, maintenance and consultation service provider of RETs.
• Carry out R&D activities to enhance the quality of RETs.
• Initiate income generation activities to improve sustainable livelihood of the poor communities.
• Organize technical training and workshops at the operational level in order to enhance skill of local people and provide opportunities of self-employment.
• Assist market research for SHSs in Nepal.

Research & Development

• Research and development of Low cost design biogas plants in collaboration with RGG in Lamjung district Nepal on Dec 1999 (constructed 6 and 8 Cubic Meter of 10 Nos. Biogas plants for Research).
• Research & Development of different types of improved cook stove & metallic stove for heating and various Parts & Appliances of Solar PV ,Biogas, Micro hydro power in own workshop at Bharatpur, chitwan Nepal.

Organizational system and Management

NEDCO is governed by its constitution that provisions General Assembly (GA) as an apex decision-making body. It is responsible for overall policy, regulation and guidance of the institution. It approves the annual work plan and audit including financial report. The GA elects a executive committee (EC) and advisory committee from the general members. The advisory committee makes policy decisions and provides strategic directions . The EC makes policy, planning, programming, supervision, evaluation, monitoring, decisions and strategic directions of the organization. The EC is overall responsible & accountable of the organisation programmes. It has organizational policy for staff and financial management.

Experiences

• NEDCO has installed a number of solar street lights of different capacity at different regions. NEDCO manufactures its own pole and also supplies these for other parities since 1999( 2056B.S).
• It has been able to install more than 50000 Solar PV HHs& Solar Thermal in its outstanding performance enlightening the rural Nepal and contributing on the recent energy crises.
• NEDCO has successfully installed the 200 Institutional Solar Photovoltaic Systems in schools/ 10 Photo Voltaic Pump System, 20 Micro & Pico Hydro at rural part of Nepal.
• NEDCO has installed 12 MHPs and 15 Solar water lifting Projects.
• NEDCO has completed more than 100 DPR & feasibility study of SHSs and constructed 10 nos. 0f large biogas plants. Likewise constructed & installed more than 20000 household biogas plants in different parts of Nepal in collaboration with RGG.
• NEDCO has installed/manufactured the 20000 different types of Improved Cooking stoves in close coordination with different I/NGOs.
• It has also been able to spread the technology in rural areas by means of organizing awareness campaigns and operating sustainable livelihood initiatives in connection with installation of Solar PV.

NEDCO is also collaborating with different micro-finance organizations for financing of RETs &Micro Hydro Power in grass-root level.
